- Low Budget Organization Hacks
This low-budget closet organization tackled a walk-in closet, a bathroom sink, and a cluttered gadget shelf during a trip to India — all for under Rs. 2000.
The closet gets organized and decluttered on every trip landing in India, yet by the time it’s time to fly back, it’s a mess again. On a recent trip, the goal was to declutter and organize on an extremely low budget — implementing hacks that would actually be timeless, not just a quick fix.
The previous trip to India in 2017 was a rushed one, full of family commitments, travel, and weddings, leaving very little time for a proper declutter. After a full reorganization in Switzerland the winter before, tackling the home in India felt like the natural next step.

Walk-In Closet Organization
The walk-in closet was the first casualty. Clean laundry hadn’t been put away in its designated place, and various bits and pieces that didn’t belong there had ended up dumped in the closet instead. A corner shelf still held some baby paraphernalia that was really cluttering things up — the first chore was selling or donating all of it, starting with a car safety seat, whose clasp foam had been badly damaged by heat and had to be thrown out. Most of the rest could be sold or donated too. Once cleared, what remained got organized with a few budget organizers and hangers for the clothes.
Bathroom Sink and Electronics
The bathroom sink and under-sink area were next. The housekeeper had simply been dumping things there, which wasn’t really her fault — there had been no organization system in place to keep it tidy, so it just kept getting worse. Old oils, cleaning supplies, and other clutter got cleared out, leaving only what was actually needed. The area is clean and inviting now, hopefully for good.
Decluttering the electronics was a job for a husband’s expertise — wires and gadgets, some left over from when the house was under construction, had been taking up a lot of space on one big shelf. Everything finally got sorted this trip, with tools consolidated into a single carton box for easy organization.
How the Organization Came Together
Supplies List
- Walk-in closet
- Bathroom sink & under-sink area
- Electronics & gadget shelf
- 3 IKEA bathroom organizers
- A few baskets
- Budget: under Rs. 2000
Instructions
Clear Out the Closet:
Start with whatever’s been sitting untouched or doesn’t belong — old baby items, damaged gear, anything that can be sold or donated.
Tackle the Bathroom Sink:
Clear out expired or unnecessary products, keeping only what actually gets used.
Sort the Electronics:
Consolidate loose wires, tools, and gadgets into a single labeled box rather than letting them spread across a shelf.
Repurpose What You Already Have:
Bathroom organizers no longer needed elsewhere, and baskets already on hand, both found new uses here rather than buying anything new.
Reassess the Space:
After just 2 days of decluttering, a surprising amount of shelf space opened up, ready for a proper organization system to keep it that way.
Making Use of What Was Already on Hand
Three bathroom organizers from IKEA, no longer needed back in Switzerland, were brought along and repurposed to store bed linens. A few baskets purchased a couple of years earlier found a new use too, holding smaller clothing items. The entire project came in under Rs. 2000 in total — just the cost of the baskets, since everything else was already on hand.
Tips for Low-Budget Organization
Declutter before you organize: selling or donating what’s no longer needed makes any organization system easier to maintain.
Reuse before you buy: organizers and baskets already on hand, or no longer needed elsewhere, can often solve a new space’s storage problem.
Consolidate loose items: grouping small tools and gadgets into one box beats letting them spread across a shelf.
Aim for timeless, not quick fixes: a system that holds up between visits is worth more than a rushed tidy-up.
