- Minimalist Home Office Makeover Tips
This minimalist home office makeover turned a huge multi-purpose room into a genuinely relaxing workspace — done mostly by rearranging existing furniture rather than buying anything new.
Come and see how a huge multi-purpose room got converted into a beautiful office space. This minimalist home office makeover and organization ticks so many boxes now — in addition to being an office, it’s also a place of relaxation, since more than half of our waking hours are spent here.
Spring cleaning is great because it gives a new perspective on change — out with the old and in with the new. There wasn’t much interest in spending a lot on this makeover; it was really about rearranging the existing furniture to make the most of the existing layout. The help of a good friend who works professionally in this field made all the difference, and it came together in a matter of minutes. Sometimes a neutral person’s fresh perspective is exactly what it takes to break away from old habits.

A Room Years in the Making
My husband and I planned this room for our home office back in 2014, while the house was being built. Since the space is around 60 square meters, it’s always had a multi-purpose use — it doubles as a yoga and fitness area, and also as our daughter’s play area. About 4 years ago, a bed sofa from IKEA was added, useful as a guest bed or for the occasional nap.
A Fresh Pair of Eyes
A spring home tour was shared in an earlier post, but the office room wasn’t included then, since it was still a work in progress. The top floor of the house badly needed a makeover, and getting there finally happened with the help of a good friend who works professionally in this field. A neutral person’s fresh perspective can be exactly what it takes to see a familiar space differently.

Instructions
1. Divide the Room into Zones:
Creating different zones helps the room look more organized and encourages focus within each part of the space. Dividing the room up by designated use makes for a much more organized result. Existing IKEA Kallax shelves were used here to divide the sitting area from the sewing and creative area, with the storage boxes switched to neutral, uniform organizers. A couple of matching cushions were added to the sofa, but otherwise the space stayed the same — and it doubles as a guest bed sofa too.
2. Use Neutral Organizers for Storage:
White organizers keep the desk clutter-free while visually creating more space. A Kallax shelf also helps hide wires from a second desk a few meters behind, and moving the printer shelf next to the Kallax shelves made the whole area feel more spacious — all without buying anything new.
3. Use Peg Boards as Organizers:
Since this room serves multiple purposes, a place was needed to store craft supplies and gift wrap. A peg board fixed to the wall a few years back solved that, with a creative corner set up just below it for a daughter to use, while a home trainer fills the empty middle space.
4. Create Clever Storage Systems:
An office still generates plenty of files and paper, even with the push toward going paperless — computers and storage systems can crash, after all. A filing cabinet holds the important papers, and a closed storage system along the taller back wall doubles as a small library for reference books, including a few on gardening.
5. Bring in Greenery:
House plants add natural color and warmth to any room. During winter, non-hardy plants get brought in from the garden, and this room had slowly become something of a dumping ground for them in the colder months. Rather than fight it, the plants were simply rearranged to add beauty to the space instead.
6. Declutter for a Minimalist Look:
Alongside the makeover, decluttering happened at the same time — tired, worn-out play carpets were disposed of, along with a trampoline, a table tennis table, and various other toys. That freed up real space in the center of the room for morning yoga and exercise, with a genuinely lovely view from the middle of the room while exercising.
7. Minimalist Lighting:
Given the size of the room, the goal was to light it with as few bulbs as possible to save energy. With a slanting roof to work around, two LED ceiling lights on either side turned out to be plenty for the whole space. LEDs are energy-saving and increasingly affordable too. A reading light fitted to the shiplap ceiling in the sitting area has been in use for almost 8 years, carried over from a previous home’s living room rather than replaced.
8. Neutral Tones to Create a Feeling of Space:
A calming, functional space is the goal for this office, which is why neutral furniture and furnishings were chosen throughout. A beige throw on the sofa doubles as a day blanket for short naps. A Roomba robot helps keep the space dust-free too, which matters especially in spring when pollen tends to drift around.

Tips for a Budget-Friendly Makeover
Rearrange before you buy: most of this makeover came from rearranging existing furniture rather than spending on anything new.
Get a second opinion: a friend’s fresh perspective can help break away from old habits and spot changes you might not see yourself.
Keep it neutral: neutral organizers and furnishings make a space feel calmer and more spacious without a full renovation.
