Easy Minimal Christmas Decor Ideas

Less is more is a concept applied to every bit of decor in this home, and Christmas is no different. Decorating again this year came together easily, without breaking the bank — here are the easy, minimal, budget-friendly Christmas decor ideas used to do it.

An earlier post gave a full tour of the Cozy Christmas Country Home, with a few of the same elements used here to keep the look minimal in most rooms. Decorations shouldn’t clutter up daily life — and honestly, who really wants to dust that much stuff.

A preference for pretty, timeless pieces has always been the guiding rule. A Christmas tree used to be part of the routine a few years back, but the current home’s living space doesn’t really allow for one, so about 75% of the old decor got given away a while ago. What remained was simply the best quality, kept to a minimum — here’s how that’s put to use for a pretty, easy effect.

LED Lighting

A lot of LED lighting goes up on the windows every year. LED lights are energy efficient, and prices have dropped a lot over the past decade — a far cry from paying 4 times as much for them years ago. They last a long time and take up very little space. Wired LEDs would be the preference, but they’re not easy to find in Switzerland. Either way, replacing perfectly functional lights just because something newer is trending never felt like a good use of money.

Bring in Fresh Greenery

Fresh greenery can be free — pick it straight from the garden, or buy it inexpensively if there’s none on hand. Some fresh ivy got clipped from the garden this year. A sleek, modern lamp needed a little face lift for the season, so red ribbon got tied around a couple of IKEA bells from last year, with green woven in between. A third bell couldn’t be found, so a faux holly and berry bunch filled in instead.

Supplies List

  • LED lighting
  • Fresh greenery & ivy
  • Glass baubles & vase
  • Pine cones & thrifted basket
  • Ceramic candle stands
  • Chalkboard & faux flowers

Instructions

  • Fill Glass Baubles into Bowls or Trays:

A round vase from Zwiesel, filled with leftover gold and red glass ornaments, created this look. A small, battery-operated wired LED added the finishing touch.

  • Use Natural Elements:

Fresh greenery picked off the ground filled an old basket thrifted from a local shop. The gold pine cones are old, picked up years ago at an end-of-season sale — though pine cones gathered from local woods and painted at home work just as well. A ribbon, one red glass bauble, a faux flower, and a few LED tea lights rounded it all out.

  • Use Decorative Candle Sticks:

Candles aren’t really a personal favorite, though a daughter loves lighting and blowing them out. A couple of pretty ceramic candle stands, picked up a few years back, used to hold Advent candles on the dining table — until they became a genuine nuisance during cleanup. This year they moved above the kitchen pantry shelves instead, paired with a faux plant, and transformed that empty space immediately.

  • Add a Picture or Two:

A small blackboard, spotted while shopping for decor and actually pulled out from a daughter’s old toy box, got a holiday greeting written on it and a spot on a kitchen shelf, with a faux flower next to it for color. The letters can be swapped out for any other occasion, giving the board a genuine second life. Since the house is built of brick and mortar, drilling unnecessary holes to hang things isn’t appealing — so keeping a few pretty pictures on a shelf works out just as well.

Minimal Christmas Dining Table Decor

Since the dining table still needs space for actual meals, the decor there stays especially minimal. Placemats got dropped a while back, since they tend to clutter the space. A nicely folded napkin and a set of napkin rings add a small touch to each place setting, and Advent candles paired with a slim flower vase are really all that’s needed beyond that.

A Few Easy Decor Tips

Reuse what already works: functioning LED lights don’t need replacing just because something new is trending.
Look for free or low-cost greenery: garden clippings, or even greenery picked off the ground, cost nothing and look just as good as store-bought.
Give old items a second life: a child’s old chalkboard toy or a thrifted basket can find a whole new purpose as seasonal decor.
Keep the dining table simple: a folded napkin, napkin rings, and a slim vase are often all a table setting needs.
