With dropping temperatures our skin dries up quicker than in summer. Personally, my skin tends to dryness by autumn, therefore a good nourishing body lotion is a must for me. There are many reasons for dry skin. According to Ayurveda, winter and autumn is Vata time and the tendency is towards dry and cold humors. Our skin reflects the state of our health, weather conditions. Additional factors include digestion and your body humor combination.

WHY I STARTED MAKING MY OWN COSMETICS ?

DIY Whipped Body Butter

The first reason why I started making my own creams and potions was to avoid harmful substances.

Commercial cosmetics are usually laden with chemicals and preservatives which are harmful. Many of them contain hormone disrupters, like Parabenes, paraffin, ETDA to name a few. These chemicals enhance the shelf life but mimic Estrogen causing many endocrine and reproductive issues. Some of them are also carcinogenic. Since many years, I have been using only natural, organic and chemical free cosmetics. My daughter’s skin reacts immediately to any kind of disturbance due to her Eczema. She is extremely sensitive to toxins, gluten and diary too. Therefore, I was determined to have only all natural and homemade stuff for my family.

Another reason was to omit all those plastics and packaging.

The third reason was to cut costs.

High quality natural body lotions are very expensive in Switzerland. Of late I have to be very cost conscious due to our changing lifestyle and finances. Expensive body lotions are a luxury and we have to dig deep into our pockets.

Our skin is the biggest organ of our body and it absorbs everything we put on it. For this reason, you will be better off using only all natural ingredients for your body butter.

Cocoa butter has a delicious chocolate smell and we all love chocolate surely. Lavender and Sandal wood oil will pair well with this combination.

HOW LONG CAN I STORE HOMEMADE WHIPPED BODY BUTTER

You can store them un-refrigerated between 3 to 6 months. Some of the Body butter recipes use aloevera gel for the simple reason of getting a less greasy body butter. Because of the aloevera gel you will need to store in the fridge.

CAN YOU SKIP THE ARROW ROOT POWDER ?

Yes, but expect to have a greasy after feel on your skin. I personally don’t like any lotion to be very greasy, so I used arrow root powder.

Any ideas on how I could incorporate magnesium oil into this? Since it’s a really a brine and I’m new to this, I’m not really sure on what to do. Would I need to add something to help it emulsify better?

This sounds heavenly. Does it work as a base for other recipes? I use this: https://www.bulkapothecary.com/categories/raw-ingredients/waxes-and-butters/ and I am wondering if yours would work as well if I made it.

Is there a way to completely cover the smell of the shea butter? I added essential oils (a papaya scent) and it still smells strongly of the shea.

Do you have the measurement for the two butters in grams?
